I checked all my water parameters - there is no ammonia, nitrites and the nitrates are at around 5pmm. Temp is at 80 degrees. Salinity is at 1.005. Using aragonite as sand so the pH is balanced at about 8.0 - 8.2. It is a 55 gallon.

Have two puffers - figure-8s. Had them for about 3 months now. Both are about 2 inches. Also inhibiting the tank are 3 bumblebee gobies and a dragon goby. Everyone seems to mind their own business.

Feed the puffers a varied diet (I've been keeping an eye on this forum for any information pertaining to puffers and have been following them to a T), such as pond snails (about the size of their eye), frozen then thawed plankton, blood worms, krill, brine shrimp (occasionally, as I keep reading that they are nutritionally barren) and one pea a week. Feed a consistent schedule of 6 days a week, fast for one day.

Today, I was doing some work on my laptop, and just happened to look over at the tank........to see one of my puffers puffed! I've never seen them puff! Is that normal? There's nothing there to stress him out. He puffed, righted himself and went on about his exploration of the tank. It's been about 2 hours since he puffed and he seems fine? I'm just worried that it's a precursor to something else. Has this happened to any figure-8 parents?

i'm no expert on puffers but i've read some on them and about my own figure 8. puffers can puff for many reasons, such as stressed or whatnot, but if no stress lines i wouldn't think that

i've also read that sometimes puffers puff for no apparent reason, i've read there is no scientific reason for why they puff sometimes; maybe they just feel the inclination to just check and make sure they can puff? idk lol, but i wouldn't worry

i've never seen my puffers puff personally though, so *shrug*

Sounds like he was probably practicing! Puffers sometimes randomly puff just because they can. Now you just need to keep a camera nearby for the next time you catch him so we can all see ;)
