Which would be better for a 125 gallon tank....(2)Emperor 400 and a Fluval 404 -or- (2) Fluval 404?

Filstar XP-3

From what I have seen, the Filstar XP-3 filters better, has handles, and has more features than Fluvals..

I would say the more filters and higher flow rate you have, the better you are filtering. So I believe the 2 Emperor 400's and 1 Fluval 404 would work better.

I would like to make a suggestion, though. I don't have personal experience with Filstar or Fluval, so I can't comment which would be better, but I do hear hundreds of good things about Filstar, very little negative talk. The Fluval, while receiving alot of good reviews, also has quite a bit of complaints. I would still buy one, but I think I'm gonna go Filstar my first canister, just due to all the debate I've read. I think I will buy a Fluval second, so I can personally experiment. Eheims are just too pricey for me right now:( .

Also, instead of 2 Emperors, why not get 1 AquaClear 500 and 1 Emperor 400 along with the canister of choice. This would really give you even more water turn over, it is really cheap, while still being of great quality, and it would be a more effective mechanical filter.

If I could have those 3 filters I'd setup the AC with two foam blocks for mechanical, the Emp for mech/chem/bio, and the Fluval or Filstar with bio/mechanical (polishing). I would add a prefilter to the canister to keep out large particles. This would give you a backup for each area, while still having each filter focus on one area. That would be an awesome setup. Enjoy whatever you decide.
