I know that the filter needs to filter the amount of water in the tank about 3-4 times an hour but I was just wondering if one hang on filter would be enough for the 35 gallon or should I get 2 smaller ones? If 2 is needed do I put one at each side of the tank?

A few of us out here still only have one filter per tank, but make sure that one is big enough - ie best to get a filter that says it's made for a bigger tank. If you have a 35g then get a filter for a 55g, etc.

Unless its a goldfish tank, in that case get 2 55g filters :)

The 3 to 5 times per hour rule is a good rule, but only if you calculate the real water turnover and not the rated turnover. Most filters only turn over 50-70% of what they are rated at. The cheaper filters sometimes only turn over 30-40% of the rated amount. So if you go by the rated output you need to look at a filter that can turn over the water 5 - 10 times per hour, which may give you a real turnover of 3 - 6 times...

I don't mind using cheap equipment, but you have to allow for it's limitations.

for example, I might like a fluval 405, but they cost $300+ in Oz and I can get 3 Chinese ripoffs of the same capacity for the same money... Even if the pump blows up I can add a pump way cheaper.
