Im not having much luck finding filter media for my Fluval 403. And I got thinking - what else could I use to fill it. I thought one of those mesh laundry bags might be perfect. What do you all think of that, assuming of course that its well cleaned and rinsed. Im actually not sure how that material would fair up tho if left in water for a long period of time, but I am just thinking temporary (like maby a month, two at the most, until I could get to an LFS in the big city - only Walmart here for supplies, and they dont carry filter floss)

Polyester quilt batting,or polyester fiberfill works wonders. You can get it from any craft store. As far as the mesh laundry bag goes,it would probably work on a pinch,as long as there was no chemical residue on it.

get the 100% polyester, make sure it doesn't have any mildewcide, etc in it. works great in my aquaclear HOB, I dont see why it wouldn't in a sump, unless it is too fine and would get clogged to quickly. If so you might get away with a course cheap white (colored might be ok but why risk it) 100% polyester or nylon fabric in that case. it should last for quite a while underwater. I use to tie things together with strips of it in a pool for a stop gap measure. it lasted for at least 2 yrs under tension. It wasn't in direct sunlight, that would kill it quickly.
