I'm curious to how people have their filter outlet positioned, presuming you have a canister filter or similar. The reason I ask is because my cabomba is starting to grow nice at the back of my tank but now it is starting to get blasted with the flow from my fluval 304.

The outlet is set at the back right in my tank and the flow fires along to the left back. Should I position it so the flow goes more towards the front of the tank where the shorter plants are unaffected? Or is it better to put some sturdier plants in front of the water stream?

Generally the bigger issue is whether the return is creating surface disturbance that will allow more CO2 to escape (and potentially starve your plants). I have my returns set up vertically, in the back corners of the tank, aimed toward the center. If your output it really too much, you can angle it back toward the glass of the tank (if you imagine the face of a clock over your tank with you at six o'clock, if your return is in the back right corner, you can angle the return to 10 or even 11 o'clock to allow movement, but deflecting much of the force towards the glass).
