I just came upon a 5 gallon hex tank eclipse with a nice filter, but no media....what can I use? I was thinking maybe the fluff from a pillow rinsed off??? Or what else could i use? Need quick response
Thanks
Cotton balls work well, so does the filter media you can purchase at the LFS for about two bucks for too much of it. Just cut it down to fit your filter and save the rest for when it needs changing, after it is about to fall apart. Just keep rinsing it off in TANK WATER, never rinse in tap water, it' kills the bacteria.
In my eclipse 3 at the office I use two pieces of filter floss. That way I can replace half from time to time or rinse half under the tap to really get all the gunk out (yes, I know it kills the bacteria, but it takes the flow of clean water to clean the floss) . Then I have a piece of coarse sponge as a final layer to keep the floss from getting out and wrapping around the biowheel.
Ok, what I did, I found some air filters and I put them in with a sponge, but that blocked the water and it overflowed, then I used just the air filter and used the sponge in the next compartment, thanks guys!
