I'm about to buy a 55 gallon tank. What would be the best filter for it???? There are SO many out there......I have been reading a ton about it and I am confused! I have never had this problem before with any of my other tanks.....I have always known just what to get! But for some reason with this one I'm stumped!

Help???!!!!!!!

Many different poeple have many different opinions. They all work great. But, If your new to the hobby. I would suggest an emperor 400. Why?

1.) it has 2 biowheels- excellent source of bio filtraiiton that has Oxy mixture at a great rate.
2.) VERY EASY to clean the pads.

Aquaclear is good to. Both are very popular, but I think the emperor has the lead because of the biowheels.

How much do you want to spend?? THe emperor 400 should do the trick.

try www.bigalsonline.com a really good deal to us Americans. Many canadians dont like them because they charge more money then what the exchange rate would suggest.

Howevver, I always order from them and they are great.! Good deals!

There are several options out there for you. You can go the HOB (hang on back) way, or the canister way.

For the HOB route, aquaclears can easily do the trick. One aquaclear 500 with two sponges (as opposed to a sponge and a carbon bag) can handle a moderately stocked 55 gallon. If you want to go the safer route, two aquaclear 300 both stuffed with two sponges can easily handle anything that a 55 gallon can contain (within reason).
Emporers will also work, but I've had very limited experience with these filters, so hopefully someone else will come in on this one.

As for the canister route, a fluval 404 should do the trick. As will a proper Eheim canister. If you want the top filter, go Eheim. They are very quiet, extremely realiable and imho better built than the fluvals. I own both filters, both have worked for me for quite awhile.
Eheims - extremely good biological filtration, lacking somewhat in mechanical filtration.
Magnum canisters - good mechanial filtration, lacking somewhat in biological filtration
Fluvals - somewhere in the middle.
I heard decent things about filstar filters as well, hopefully someoen else can fill you in on those filters.

Thanks for all your help......

I was originally looking at the Emperor 400....that is the one I thought would be the best so now that I know it's good...that is the one I will buy!

I'm not big on Aquaclears.....they are good filters but not one of my personal favourites!

Have checked out Big Al's Online.....I am Canadian so the prices are a little higher but the lfs that I shop at is called Aquarium Services and they are based around Big Al's products.....I spend the extra money for quality!!!!

I have a 50G with an AC300 and Emporer280. They both work great along with a gravel vacuum. It is stocked with goldfish which are not the cleanest fish (i.e., they crap a lot).

Erynn,

I'm going to move this thread over to FW equipment and DYI for more responses ! :)

Filstar and a HOB

A canister filter (Filstar) and a HOB filter is the way to go, in my opinion. I would not get a HOB if you are going with live plants.
