is a small 10 gallon whisper filter safe? I'm so afraid my blunt betta will wedge himself in/around it and get his fins stuck ( he's not that clever ) x.x
I'm getting two 10 gallons and a 5 gallon, a tank for females and my single male. I'd like to put the whisper in with the female ( or the male ) whichever works better/safer.
any tips? spawning tips would be ncie as well, my male is a gorgeous firey red

I can't help with Betta spawning info, but your filter and fish will be fine.

Hi there Allison Reed, you should put the filter on the 10 gallon and use that for your females. You could also ( and will likely need to ) put a betta barrack in this tank for your male. If you plan to breed them you will need the 5 for the male while he is breeding. You can keep the male here when he is not guarding a nest or fry. When you have a spawn move him to the barracks. When you are ready to breed them put the male in the 5 and a female in a large jar or other receptacle. When he builds a nest and she shows signs of wanting to go to it or him let her out. You will need to remove her once they spawn. In the 5 I would recomend a sponge filter on a low setting. This does two things, breaks up surface film and provides the fry a first food in the form of the microbes that will live on the sponge. I prefer the hydro type which are lifted up off the gravel. You should also keep a lid on the 5 to keep the air moist. It is supposed to be good for the babies when they head up to breathe. For a more detailed account of spawning bettas there are many inexpensive betta books to help you out there. One word of warning, around here most of the fish sold as females are really short finned males. You can look to the books on the difference in appearence between the two. As a general rule though the females have three faint stripes that are more evident when she is ready to breed. Good luck.

Except for cooler temperatures Paradisefish are happy in similar conditions to their Betta cousins. I have a male happy (he's courting the female next door) in a glass drum 9 1/2 inches across and 5 inches high (a salad bowl really) that's stuffed with plantlets of Java Fern, Anubias nana, shreds of Java Moss etc. A plant nursery. With no filtration --only water changes (30-40% a week roughly). There's no ammonia, because the plants use it all. A scattering of half an inch of gravel covers the bottom. There are Melania snails. I draw a paper towel across the surface now and then, but he's glad of the stillness and quiet.

The water is clear as crystal.

Hi, Allison Reed !

Welcome to AquariaCentral, home of the most thread-moving Admins anywhere on the web. We're happy to have you !

BTW.... I'm going to move this thread over to the General FW forum since this is not directly a beginner's question ! :)

I have a Whisper 40 (on low or medium) on my 10 gallon. My Betta does fine with it, in fact he likes to play in the filter current, strange I know, and I even catch him playing in the air pump bubbles from time to time. I think I'm gonna change to a Aqua Clear in the near future. I just like them better.

I have for years used 2-4 gal tanks to breed. bettas. I split the tankinto two areas with a sheet of styrofoam wedged inplace andallow it to be a few inches from bottom of tank. I then cut a syro coffee cup in to and float one of the halves on one side and let the opening (top) face to where I can watch. the other side of the tank Iload up with plants or wool strinstied to a weight (they float up as plants).this side allows female to hide when male is to aggressive. After they spawn the male will take care of bubble nest and fry until they start free swiming (remove male ).The female is removed oncespawning is complete. I cover tank top with clear sarane wrap and havea very mild air stone to bubble water movement. You must have prepairedlive food for the fry in advace(brime shrimp or infusion).the fry will attack anything moving and later on can adapt to dry food.Once fry grow watch for any(about 1/2 " size) that become aggresive (most likely young males) and remove them (quart mason jars 1/2 filled will work.

I have a 5g minibow tank with a whisper filter and my betta is doing fine one thing I suggest though is put the flow on the low setting they do not like strong current from the filter.
