At the moment on my 55G I have an AC110 and a Whisper 60. The thing is that the Whisper 60 has been noisy since day 1, and is really starting to get on my nerves, especially beside the silent Aquaclear filter. So I am thinking of simply getting rid of it (actually keeping it as a spare).

The thing is I don't like only having 1 filter on the tank, when I previously used just the Whisper 60 half of the tank would look dirty compared to the other side (only on the water surface). I have an airstone that I would use temporarily (I used to have a Penguin 100 on there but use it on my QT when needed) but don't really like to have the airstone on constantly.

So if I just use the AC110 is that enough of a filter on the 55G alone? I still have the Penguin 100 and will most likely put that back on with the AC110, but in case of QT only the AC110 will be on there. The tank stock is 3 angels, 5 rummy nose tetra (although if these 5 survive they will increase to 10-12) and 8 peppered cory cats. Water changes are once or twice a week of approx 30-40%

The other thing is that the AC110 has only been on there for about 3 weeks, would enough bacteria have built up in there by now for it to be safe to remove the Whisper 60? (seriously, the noise is so annoying). The AC110 just has the foam, bio cartridges and some crushed carbon.

Thanks.

I would add a small canister and get rid of the troublesome filter. You could take it off now, but watch for a minicycle until the 110 catches up.

from the sounds of it you are using the penguin 100 as a qt filter?

why not use the whisper as a qt . remove carbon from the ac 110 and place in an extra foam pad.
run the 110 and the 100 on the 55.

you can use sponge media from the 110 to seed the whisper in the event of qt.

the ac 110 should have enough bacteria in it to sustain the current set up but watch for a possible mini cycle(bacteria from the whisper will need to be replaced in the 100 and 110)

110)

Just realised I put crushed carbon, I meant crushed coral.

The thing with using the Whisper as the QT filter is that my QT tank is currently only a 10G, is the Whisper 60 not a little big for that tank? I guess I could just turn the flow on it to the lowest setting.

Can I take the bio-foam sponges from the Whisper and put into the Aquaclear? The whisper has filter cartridges, and in front (or behind, whichever way you look at it) has bio-foam for bacteria to grow. Hopefully there will be enough room in the AC110 for both foam pads.

Hmm I guess my edit time ran out, I moved one of the bio-foam cartridges into the AC110, not enough space for both (well I might be able to get both in there, but would lose room for the coral, and my bio-cartridges would then probably be barely in the water). I think for now I will put the other one into the Penguin and have some peace!! (other than the water splashing).
