Hey everyone,
I currently have 2 oscars and a Red Pacu in a 29 gallon tank. I know what your thinking...they need a much bigger tank; your right! A friend of mine is willing to give me a 300 gallon tank and since we are moving i will finally have room for it. My quesion is: What is the best filtration system to use. I am looking at canister filters but i am not sure how many GPH i will need. If someone has any idea, please respond or send me an email. Thank-you
:shark:

Fluval just came out with a new canister filter that is supposed to be good for upto 400 gallons I think. It's called FX or EFx, something along those lines.

well i currentluy keep oscars and a pacu and i'm sure u know they are very messy eaters. both types of fish produce large amounts of waste. so i would suggest making sure your getting atleast IMHO (and thats just what it is an opinion) 2000 GPH but i would shoot for closer to 3000 GPH if at all possible. i'm not sure how big ur pacu is but i can tell u the larger they get the flightier they get meaning they are very easily startled. so be sure u have a very good tight fitting lid or it can very well jump right out of ur tank without any problems. my red belly is currently about 10" long and growing at a very steady rate of about an inch and a half per month. with a very voracious appetite.

The Fluval FX5 is Hagen's new big filter, it looks like a small shop vac. It pushes 900gph. It says its rated for 400gal aquariums, but on a tank that big, with messy fish like that, I'd probably run two. Its expensive, probably like $500+ in filters for the two of them, but it will definitel keep your water clean.
