I know you guys get these questions all the time, but I'm just confirming to make sure I don't spend too much money on useless stuff. Money here isn't an issue, so if anyone sees anything better for my setup (50 gallons , planted), the plese tell me abuot it :)

First of all, I was thinking of going for 2 filters: a canister and a HOB.

So for the canister, I was thinkiing of either a Fluval 404 or a Eheim 2213.
For the HOB, I was leaning more towards the marineland penguin 350 B than the aquaclear 50. Do you think any of these will do the work. Also, this will be a planted tank with angelsfish, so is there any problems with flow rates I may encounter? in other words, it is possible that my flow rates might be too high?

Thanks!

Why not just upgrade the canister to a Eheim 2215 and not buy the Penguin. It will cost the same and you will only have the one filter that should be able to handle a 50 gallon without a problem.
Also, in the Planted tank section of this website, people often say that the Penguins and Emperors with the bio wheels are not that good for planted tanks because the are so good at oxygenating the water they can be detrimental to plants.

For planted tanks with CO2 I would not get a hang-on with a Bio wheel. It would take out all the CO2. I use HOB HOT magnums, they really HOB cannisters.

How are the Bio-Wheels allegedly removing CO2 any more than any other filter? Or oxygenating any more than another filter with the same flow rate?

Although there are advantages to having two filters for redundancy (my NASA buddies would use three for double redundancy!), I would like to make them two of the same to share media, procedures and such unless you're just trying to reuse what you already have.

So I guess there's no real point in me getting 2 filters then, eh?

I'll just go for the canister filter then. At least it's going to make my life easier with 1 filter!

Thanks everyone!
