Filtration overkill?

i wouldn't say less frequent..... just different.

i was new at the time and i figured the extra filtration would make a difference for being highly overstocked.... wrong answer. the extra filtration doesn't make alot of differences with the chemical balances, it does however get rid of alot of sediment and crud. in a couple of my 10g's that have 5-15 whispers there is always some sort of stuff on the bottom. so when you dump in water it stirs up alot of stuff. in that 55 there was very little most times and it barely required vacuuming. you could actually sort of see stuff moving across the bottom in the current. it is still pretty much that way and i have kept the fluval 404 and emp 400 on the tank because i like not seeing that stuff and it does decrease some maintenance.

sorry, water changes are still a neccessary evil, but it's different. in the 10g's you want to do more to decrease the sediment in the water, in the 55 i know i am just doing them to have fresh water.

Is your 55g a planted tank? I wouldn't think with all that current it'd be good for the plants!
