Hello everyone,
I was just feeding my male betta today and I noticed that all of his fins were ragged and decayed to about a centimetre in.:headshake2: There are thin black clusters outlining his fins and fin rays. I have done a 50% water change and added salt to the aquarium. Tomorrow I will go out and get antibiotics. What brands do you guys reccommend? The temp is a steady 80 degrees fairenheight and the water is completely cycled. What do you guys think caused it and how should I treat it? It does not look severe yet but it could become severe very soon.
Thanks,
Tom

Someone has to at least look at my problem.

I looked at it and I wish I could give you an answer. I know alot of people on here say that clean water helps more than anything. I sometimes have trouble getting answers too for a while, I think it depends on who's on at what time. Don't give up, and keep bumping if you have to and you'll get some answers from the great people on here! I hope your betta gets better.

Treat it with something for fin rot. I would suggest something other than a "fix" med.
W/c daily.. thats all I can suggest

antibiotics are not necessary yet, IMO, if the rot is only just beginning. no sense in getting out the big guns now, before you try the simple remedies first.

daily water changes are a must for your betta, and lower the temperature a few degrees, but no lower than 76. bacteria is the cause of fin rot for the most part and bacteria like warm conditions.

right now, do a large water change of at least 75% to remove as much of the salt as possible. salt is not needed for freshwater fish unless you are treating for ich, IMO. keep doing daily water changes for at least a week, and of at least 50% a day, but closer to 75% would be better.

you said 'the water is cycled'. the water is not what becomes cycled, it is the media in the filter, and to a lesser degree the surfaces within the tank. what size tank is it and what are you running for filtration?

and if the need arises for medication, go get 'Betta Revive'. it comes in a little fish shaped container and is a blend of malachite green and methylyne blue. i've used this product with great success on all my cases of betta fin rot.

Here's what I did:
- Do 30%-40% water change, everyday
- Put medication after water change. Any medicine that can treat Betta fin rot is fine, but I use Melafix.
- Do it for one week, DO NOT feed the Betta

It should be fine after a week.
