Fin Rot in Betta

antibiotics are not necessary yet, IMO, if the rot is only just beginning. no sense in getting out the big guns now, before you try the simple remedies first.

daily water changes are a must for your betta, and lower the temperature a few degrees, but no lower than 76. bacteria is the cause of fin rot for the most part and bacteria like warm conditions.

right now, do a large water change of at least 75% to remove as much of the salt as possible. salt is not needed for freshwater fish unless you are treating for ich, IMO. keep doing daily water changes for at least a week, and of at least 50% a day, but closer to 75% would be better.

you said 'the water is cycled'. the water is not what becomes cycled, it is the media in the filter, and to a lesser degree the surfaces within the tank. what size tank is it and what are you running for filtration?

and if the need arises for medication, go get 'Betta Revive'. it comes in a little fish shaped container and is a blend of malachite green and methylyne blue. i've used this product with great success on all my cases of betta fin rot.

I agree with BFM. This is what your Betta needs. Pristine, clean, pure, water will be the best thing. Lower the temp as mentioned by BFM, bacteria love temps at 77 degrees and above.

Let us know about the filter, too, please, and tank size. Water conditioner and testing equipment to test the parameters: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph, (GH and KH if possible but most kits don't have that)

I hope your Betta is better soon.

I have been battling fin rot for months. Most of the time daily water changes will clear it up. But so far I have tried macryn 1, macryn2, Lifegaurd (jungle), melafix, and salt. Stay away from melafix as the oil can suffocate fish that go to the surface to breath.
I'm going to try Betta Revive, my advice is to go with that if the water changes don't clear it up. The other meds just seemed like a waste of time and money IMO.

I have been using tetracycline. All water paramteters are clear and the tank is cycled. The betta is starting to recover. Thanks for all the advice :) .
