this is a tough one. although they have been in your tank for a year, since cardinal tetras are wild caught, it may have been some sort of internal parasite or other type of infection or disease that remained dormant until the fish were stressed in some way. this could be anything from a change in chemistry that is now unnoticed, (what is the pH and hardness). or since some of those other fish are pretty active and could be nippy they may have chased the cardinals which stressed them which allowed a pathogen to get a foothold in them. out of all of those fish the cardinals are the most sensitive so it would make since that if anyone got sick it would be them. do you have a hospital/quarantine tank? if so you may want to take on the challenge of netting out all the sick cardinals and treating with a variety of meds for different illnesses. cardinals like their water pretty acidic (6.0-6.5) and fairly soft. either of those being off could affect the cardinals first and leave the rest perfectly fine. if you dont have the tests kits for everything you can either buy them or have your LFS test for what you cant.
