We finally got a OT - 10 gal set-up. In the past we have had to use the puny little 1 gallon for a hospital tank. It was not big enough to effectively QT new fish (we usually buy several at a time) It will have to serve as both a FW and a SW QT, so we will be unable to leave it up and running all the time. It is possible for us to set it up at least a few days in advance of a purchase, as long as we don't make any impulse buys... but you know how that is.

We plan on keeping extra media in at least one of the FW's and in the SW to seed the tank appropriatly when we need it.

Hopefully we will eventually have both a SW and a FW QT - but the decision to leave a tank empty (!!!) was a huge step forward for us. The 5 hex was supposed to be a QT, but you know how it goes... and it had been a long time since we had a serious problem...

After the major ICK outbreak that I am battling in my 37 tall, we decided that we will never not QT again.

Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Why not take the filter from the 10 and run it for a few days on your main tank - once the ICK is gone.

That way the filter builds up the bacteria it needs. You just swap it to the QT and there you go.

Sorry - I have no idea what would work for salt water, but it would work for the fresh water tanks.

It gives you extra filtration when not in use for the QT - just be sure that you do not put it back on your other tanks with out a thorough cleaning if you have had any type of problem in the QT. It is OK to scrub it down if you plan to rebuilt the bateria colony anyway. So - when the QT is not in use, just clean the filter and put it back on the one of the other tanks. It is ready in very short notice.

6 tanks huh - :girl: - OK - I'm jealous.
Someday.....I hope!

i got lucky on the QT - it came in to our thrift shop and I offered $5 for it. Came with hood, filter (HOB) and some decorations. Most of the decorations will probably go to our 13 y/o for her tank - but some of the palstic plants hubby put in the cichlid tank. The QT will be bare.

We just have to figure out where to put it. If it had a stand, we'd just move some furniture... or get rid of some furniture... I'm afraid we are running out of furniture to move... Living room set goes 1st... :)

I run sponges on all tanks that can be brought over to a newly set up QT. The running of the small HOB on an existing tank and bringing it over when needed is another good option.

Unsure about how you would do it for SW. Bring over some live rock and water? Can you keep small chunks of live rock in a sump and bring them over?

Make a thread in the SW section and see what others do?

You're welcome! ;)
