Hello, I finally started building my stand... Only the frame is done for now, it should be finished by next week.

I used Orion's advice, I made the frame out of pine 2X4's. It's a really solid piece. I did not put a support in the middle front of the unit becuase I will be placing my fuge/sump in there, and this way, I can really maximise the space that I have to work with.

What do you think of the frame? I'll keep on posting pics as the stand progresses.. .

My next step is to add 1/2" MDF along the interior sides of the piece, and on the MDF, I'll be adding an Arborite, and seal the edges. On the interior bottom, I'll be adding russian plywood, again, covered with arborite. The reason I'm using Arborite is so that if I ever have splashing water,m or some spills, it won't soak into the wood, and it'll be easy to clean.

The outside will be covered with a Birch finished 3/4" russian plywood, maybe stained, (probably not.. I kinda like the natural look of Birch) sealed, and varnished.

What do you think?

Looks really good! Very sturdy. I like the doubled up boards on the outside frame--that looks really nice.

That looks very beefy.. do you have the plans for that? I would love to build a nice stand for my 55. I have a store bought stand but it doesn't really match the decor of my house.

Don't store stands suck? I've been trying to find something decent looking, but most are ugly. . .And the ones you find that are half decent cost an arm and a led....

I don't really have plans for it. I had a general idea of what I wanted, and I got some help while building it. I can work out some details though, if you'd like...

What are the dimensions of your tank ?

My tank is 48 1/4" long, by 18 1/4 deep, by 24" high. I made the frame of the stand 48 1/2" long, by 18 1/2" deep, by 40" high.

The actual dimensions are:

48"W x 18"H x 12 1/2"D

And I feel like you do... I can't find a decent looking stand anywhere that doesn't cost a fortune. It gets frustrating sometimes.

****, that should definatley do the job.

if you really wanna waterproof the stand you could use some marine grade varnish on it.. but i dont really see the need.

!!! I ordered the russian ply from a new supplier of ours. They promised it would be beautiful, with a guarentee of 2 knots or less in a 5' x 5' sheet. We recieved the wood, it looks like garbage . Color is ugly, it's got a whole bunch of knots... etc. etc. Anyway, I called up the guy, told him about it, was supposed to come yesterday, but he never showed!

He's gonna hear it on Monday!!! It's one thing to be late when delivering wood for jobs we have, but when it comes to my personal aquarium stand and canopy, it's just wrong!!!!! ;)

Hopefully the stand will be ready for next week...

Ahhh I feel better now. Just needed to vent a little bit. . :)
