wooohooo I couldnt be happier about my fish..
I finally got my Kenyi pair from a lfs dealer...
he traded my africans for his pair...now to wait for them to
breed...cant wait...like they say patience is a virtue!!

My kennyi have proven to be extremely easy to breed. In fact, I started with a quartet of kennyi and had dozens after a couple years. I ended up giving almost all of them away, and separated the males and females, because I couldn't get rid of the offspring.

Clean, hard, alkaline water and 4-5 females per male are needed. If you have only one female, the male is likely to hound her to death... even if she's holding.

I have found that a large scale water change, with a 4-6 degree drop in temperature, stimulates breeding.

Good luck!

thank you ...the man i got them from actually said that they were diggin in the rocks and that he did know if she had accecpted the male.. so i guess it wouldnt hurt to go and get a few more females but the funny thing is when i was watching them lastnight they were going up and down the glass and swiming around in eachother in circles while going up and down the glass..so i dont know if they were courting or what.

Keeping a ratio of 3 or 4 females to every male cannot be overemphasized. You will have a dead female if you don't get some other girls to spread the attention.

ok i took the male out of the tank and placed him in a bucket with air rator overnight and placed him back in a new rock display i gave her over night to find her place...now i am out looking for a large female which is harder then i thought it would be i called around to all the pet stores i can and no one has a large female kenyi ... how frustrating...but i guess i will have to wait and see what happens....hopefully i will find something soon...my question is ..if i put in some medium females will they be killed by either the larger female or the male?

Did the guy at the lfs know you were buying them for breeding? If so, why didn't he tell you you'd need a few more females? Now you have to go in search for more, and large ones aren't always easy to find.

Not sure about medium sized ones. I'm not experienced with Kenyi, but I've had experiences with other cichlids.

I wish you all the luck to getting more females, and a successful breeding outcome.

;)

Medium females should be OK, particularly if they're sexually mature. The main point is for the male to have more than one object of interest. They don't have to be the same size.

ok i will go out and see if i can get a couple of females and see how they handel up to them if they dont really take to him and he starts nipping at them and i take him out of the tank will the large female kill them i just dont want to basically feed them to the other larger fish
