fire belly toad situation

i had 3 toads in a 20long and unfortunately one died (despite very expensive trips to the vet). so now it's just 2 toads: a big green one and a small brown one.
greeny is one mean toad..it would never let brown eat, and the last time i was handfeeding brown, greeny jumped over and put browns entire head in its big fat mouth and would not let it go..so clearly it was time to seperate them. brown is still in the 20 and greeny is in a 5.5. everytime i open the top of the 5.5, greeny jumps and bites at me
i'm just wondering if this is normal bahavior or maybe its just mad that its in the smaller tank?

If one frog is significantly bigger than the other, that could be the issue. From what I understand, frogs can be very territorial. I would say that when there were 3 frogs, the dominance was already established and they probably kept each other "in check", but now that things have changed, the big frog could be trying to establish itself as the boss. (and I suppose that includes biting you. He must be one hardcore frog)
 
Wow, I've never heard of a FBT acting like that before. But I agree that it is most likely a dominance issue. It's a good idea when keeping frogs together to have animals of similar size so that they don't pick on the weaker, smaller animal. One question; what are you feeding the frogs and how often do you feed them?
 
i get 2 dozen live crickets a week (kept in a seperate container with gutload).
i dust them with supplements once a week, they get fed about 4 times a week.

if possible, id rather have them in the same tank instead of 2..would adding 1 or 2 more toads be a good idea, or no?

Well technically you could probably keep up to 5 or 6 toads in that sized tank. Many toad and frog species will prey on other small frogs & toads including their own species. That's why I mentioned it's a good idea to have all the toads be the same size. You might want to also try feeding them a bit more. I know that FBT have very large appetites for their size.
 
thanks, ill start feeding more right away

ive had these toads for about 6 months and i only started noticing it about a week after one died. i was wondering if i got a few more, that the aggressivness of the big toad would maybe fade a little? i dont want to keep them in seperate tanks if i dont have to.
 
I'm not really sure, frogs and toads aren't my specialty. :( You could give it a try.
I did keep a pair of FBT before, but that was well over 10 years ago.
