I recently bought a 3 inch baby fire eel. I already have him eating frozen blood worms out of my hand. The problem I have is anything else I try to feed him he turns his nose to it until I give him the blood worms. I tried daphnia, beef heart and brine shrimp (all frozen). What do I do!!!!! He/she begs for food twice a day so he eats twice a day. He is in a 6 ft 125 gallon tank. I have plenty of hiding spots for him and he seems very happy. He is out all day and disappers at night. Any help would be great! Anything I should know will be helpful. I have heard they are hard to get to that nice beautiful size and I want to do everything right. Thanks!

no experience with them, but as with most fish i have learned to feed them what they do eat for a while, and slowly transition them to other foods, it is the same with baby fish, like baby discus and angelfish, they eat only a few or only 1 type of food( as mine only ate frozen brine shrimp), and u have to adjust them after 3-4 weeks to the new foods(now my baby fishes eat most foods;))

good luck;)

any pics!:)

Live blackworms are another good choice for now. As it gets larger you can go with redworms then nightcrawlers. I found the one I raised from about 3" to 16" ignored fish that it could have swallowed, but I was feeding VERY heavily with live blackworms. I remember one in an lfs many years ago that was over 3' long and would come out of his hide on cue to take nightcrawlers from the owner's hand. A very cool fish if you have the room.

Where can I get live black worms? It is so cool hand feeding him. I put the blood worms in the tank still frozen and he is aggresively tearing at it and twisting in my hand. I even have the angel fish and dwarf gouramis eating out of my hand! I want to play hard ball with him but I am so happy hes eating I really dont care what at this age.

My LFS carries live black worms, but nobody else in the area does. You just have to check around. Most places don't like to sell them because they take extra work for the employees as they need to be rinsed every day to be kept clean and healthy, and they need to be kept refrigerated to stay fresh and in a semi-dormant state.

Here you go. Get a couple of their worm keepers and buy 3/4 lb. You need to keep them in the fridge and you certainly should rinse them daily but if you miss a day here and there it''ll be fine. The work keeper trays make daily care a snap. If no place around you sells blackworms and you know any other aquarists you might even be able to feed your Eel for free..

if you use them all yourself it should last a couple of months provided you keep up on the worm maintenance.
