firebelly toad Barking/Breeding

They can - but some poo poo it.

My toads are SOOOOOO loud it can be annoying. No babies yet, but I also do not reproduce the environment to simulate breeding time (no room the new babies). I have 2 males and 2 females.

Definately use a filter. But mine spend about 50% on land and 50% in the water, so that is how I have it setup (it is a 30G plit).

Good Luck.

i used to give 10-20 little toads to my LFS a month, i had 4 adult toads in a 20G Long, and they hooked me up me with an endless supply of eggs and tadpoles... which happen to be one of my favorite aquatic animals, so i had fun raising the little guys until they grew their legs, then off to the LFS for some store credit. :D

Must be nice, my lfs wont give me didly squat. I once wanted to sell some juvenile fish - they said they would give me $5 (for 10). I looked at what they charged - $8.00 per fish. So that would be about $65 profit (after counting food and care). Yikes. I ended up given them to a new hobbyist.

thats wicked, how did you get them to breed so often(did you do anything to stimulate their mating?),whats your setup/what kind of firebellies are they, orientals or european?
check out my new setup and let me know if its alright,i still got to get some extra stuff yet,its not finished...i know i need to get rid of the moss and stuff but i dont know what to lay down instead, its all my pet store sells for moss...let me know if its a half decent setup for breeding though, thanks.

i also heard my toad bark for the first time last night when i was going to sleep, hopefully he's happy with his new setup because it was their first night in it and iv never heard any of them bark prior to yesterday.

I would say you need a few floating plants, as I can see from the pic he is on top of the filter, if you get a few plants they will rest on them in the water, and the females lay their eggs in the bushy plants so deff invest in a few of them, if would look a lot better also. Also I think a background makes any tank look fabulous and makes the toads feel a lot more secure! =) I wouldnt even worry about the moss, i would just take it off and let them have the rock itself as the land, but I would also get a little hide box on there. It will look very good once you add a few plastic plants though =) Glad to hear they started barking, they deffinatly love set ups with all that water =)

^ like that, simple but they spend all day going from one to another, they hold on with their 2 front legs and just chill in the water hehe also when they get startled they like to swim under and hide under the plants.
Good luck!

thanks firebelly girl,so you suggest i get some plants like the one in the lower part of your picture? also,do you think i should get real plants? their hard to get here in newfoundland,do flower stores carry aquatic plants?...or pet stores?

also, does anyone know if orientals and europeans can mate?

You dont really need real plants, im not sure how they would do in firebellys water anyways, and you need the right lighting and a substrate, i really dont think they would care at all. Yeah the pics in the water is what i mean, they like to hang out on them all day. I wouldnt see why orientals and europeans cant mate, unless somebody can correct me.

k thanks a lot, how often am i suppose to clean/replace the water?

my tank was completely artificial, no live plants or anything.. i had a small stingray filter in the water, and there was a small dry area for the mealworms and crickets that they ate, so the calcium powder wouldnt wash off.

i just piled a big wad of plastic plants in the water, and they laid eggs on it.. a normal UV light overhead, nothing special, and they did their thing. it was loud though, i could hear them making noises upstairs with the bedroom door closed!

With the filter, I change my water every...about 3 weeks, even then its not that bad. Yes I can hear my toads through the vents when their upstairs and im on the main floor! lol actually in my bedroom though its not that bad with their filter going, and a fish tank filter going, and a fan lol.
