first real plant help

I won a plant at my Aquarium club tonight and I don't know how to plant it. The plant is: Vallisneria americana. I have non-planted 55g gravel bottom tank. Should I even try and plant it? Is there anything I need to do to the plant before I put it in the tank?

It lookas if the plant will eventually grow higher than your tank. Lighting might be an issue depending on your particular WPG. Others with more experience wil chime in I'm sure. Good luck.
