First tank ideas for a little girl

Yeah, I thought we had talked her into a 20....hope springs eternal.

lol! Forunately our 20g isn't really being used. ;)

if your betta only lasted a year, then you must've been doing something wrong. and then you suggest fish like guppies? right.

Bettas are hardy, to be sure, but the one's that MOST people buy, the type you get at your average wal-mart in a little cup, are typically older, or prematurely old due to the way in which they have been kept, and typically only last a few years more. There are always exceptions. No need for nastiness.

The average lifespan for a betta, by the way, is three years. As you can only keep one in a tank at one time, that means that every few years, your fish is dead. Guppies, on the other hand, can be there in many multiples, meaning that if one dies, you still have a bunch. Hence, a young girl doesn't get heartbroken when her ONLY FISH that she has been attached to for a YEAR or TWO has died.

right....

Have you considered adding low maintenance plants to help with water quality? I'm thinking that Java Moss or Salvinia would make good choices.

As for fish in a 20 long, I think I'd do one male Betta, 3-4 Siamese Algae eaters, a small school of some sort of tetra, a snail or two, and maybe a few smaller shrimp.

My first fish were guppies, very colorful, easy to breed which is exciting, and fun to watch, quite hardy. These first fish have hooked me in to loving fish. A Betta would be another awesome choice.
