Hi all you Marine Dudes,

Im thinking about setting up my first Marine setup. The actual tank will be an acrylic 10-15gallon (not yet decided), im probably going to go with fake rocks to start off with before i even attempt the live stuff. For fish i was thimking about a breeding pair of Common Clown Fish? Along with perhaps a couple of Turbo Snails and shrimp of some sort (help me choose?).

Any feedback or advice would be awsome,

thanks in advance
Flagfish.

Just a thought for you to consider...
The Larger the tank the easier it is to control...
I have a 24gl and am upgrading to a 90...
And i would start with the live rock, you get nice critters on live rock plus the bacteria is always a plus for the aquarium...

Live rock requires little to no care, if you can keep fish, you should have zero problems keeping your live rock live.

What are you doing for: filtration, lighting, substrate, salt mix, test kits and cycling/establishing the tank?

How much research have you put into this?

live rock will make keeping fish so much easy-er & the fish will be happy-er
the fake stuff can near enough cost as much as the real stuff you would only need 5-7kg of live rock so £55 - £77 & this rock will add to later rock on an up grade because once you start out you will soon want to up grade as i started with a 15gal tank ran a pair of clowns & scooter blenny for 4 months then up graded to a 29gal now thinking of a 100gal......

Im not really sure about filtration but will a standard heater be fine? Iv'e been researching for a couple of days and have just got attached to this section of the hobby. As for the rock, yeah if it's easy i probably will give it a shot. What about my stockings?

clowns sound good, and i would go with a cleaner shrimp. I feed mine right out of my hand and he cleans my hand off every time I move stuff around (play with my tank).

how do you plan on cycling the tank? your LFS will suggest getting damsels of some sort of cheaper fish (that way they make some money off you)
I suggest you do it the right way and go the to grocery store and buy a couple of fresh shrimp and place them in a mesh bag. Place them into the tank and watch the ammonia spike and then go away.

This is better for the fish seeing it will cause less stress for them. Then you can get the fish you want to keep.

Turbos are great algae eaters. Really most snails are fine. The only ones that I know of that you want to stay away from in the stores are Cowries. Some one said that bumble bee snails are bad and may cause trouble but i have 4 of them and they have not caused me any problems yet, but they look really cool.

Conch's is great for cleaning sand (u need to get live sand for that)
but i would suggest getting live sand anyway. It will help because all the bacteria that comes in there plus all the little critters are handy in the long run.

2 turbos with a few hermit crabs red blue black leg witch ever but blue leg are smaller so would look good & the turbos & crabs will be a great help on the clean up section of your new tank......

I cycled my 15gal just with live rock for 2 weeks i added 7kg`s to the tank then a week later i added 5 hermit crabs then a week are 2 later i added my first fish & i never once add a problem live rock cycling is what my local reef shop s swear by due to the amount of good bacteria with in the rock
