Platies, Danios, Rasboras, Neons & other Tetras....the possibilities are (almost) endless. Of course, I wouldn't put all these fish together in such a small tank but as far as what would look good? many fish!

I keep a planted 10 gallon with 3 cory catfish and 5 white cloud minnows. I also had a betta in there but he moved on to the spare 5 gallon. I like to avoiud overstocking so that if I miss a water change drastic things will not happen.
Here's what I'm thinking
1 Betta
6 neon/glowlight/black tetra (don't know which one yet)
2 cories
or
1 Apistogramma nijsseni male
5 Dwarf Rasboras
2 Shrimp (ghost/amano) or 2 cories if the apisto will leave them alone.
or
Could anything else be kept with a Apisto. Nijsseni pair in a 10g.
The male is supposed to be about 2" and the female smaller.

Dwarf rasboras...do you have access to those? They're usually very rare from what I've heard/read/seen.
I would get a minimum of three cories - they need friend to feel secure. If you would like a few more, consider looking for pygmy cories. They stay VERY small and are very active. I've got six and I love them.
Just be aware that they are NOT scavengers and need to be fed just like other fish. They need a wide variety of foods
You can get many more shrimp in that tank. They aren't usually counted against the bioload and it is often said that one per gallon is a good rule of thumb.
I do believe that black neon tetras tend to get a bit bigger than regular neons/glowlights. Cardinals are an option too.
Harlequin rasboras would work nicely.
If you want a really active tank...think about danios (but not with the betta). They are very active swimmers.
instead of a betta with the smaller tetras, have you considered a dwarf gourami? I'm fond of the neon blues variety.
Also, can I suggest a black background for the tank?

Kuhli loaches are peaceful bottom feeders that would do well in that tank. They have very slender bodies so I don't think they add all that much to the bioload.
I believe kuhlis need a sandier/smoother substrate....because they like to burrow/dig around through it. Could be thinking of something else though.
Watch some of those tetra choices with bettas. Neon are probably fine but the black neons are a bit nippy I think. Don't know about the glowlight. Betta fins are a tempting treat. Cories and betta work well and H rasboras should be fine with bettas as well.
Glowlights are fine I've heard that the blacks can be nippy...though I think they'd be fine with a betta...as long as there are enough of them.
