I'm just getting home from visting my fam this thanksgiving and went to check on my both of my tanks. 20 gallon checks out okay, I look into my 10 gallon and notice one of my golden white clouds is hovering near the surface. At first he looks normal but then quickly turns and I notice he is missing an eye!! I've had this fish for over a year with no problems. The ten gallon currently has the following inhabitants: 2 black skirt tetras, 3 golden white clouds and 2 new tiger barbs. I haven't noticed any aggression from the tiger barbs but I think they may be the culprits. I don't think fish just normally lose eyes or could I be wrong? My guess is the tiger barbs and I will be removing them.

At this point the white cloud is very pale and flush. Is there any meds I can purchase or any treatment that is recommended to help the fish live through this?

Several years ago I had a 10 gallon with an assortment of typical aquarium fish. I had two cory cats... and one day I noticed one had lost an eye. Now, I did have three tiger barbs at one point that harrassed all my fish, but my memory doesn't serve me well enough to say if they were in the tank at the time of the eye loss.
The catfish lived long and prospered with just one eye. I didn't do anything to treat it.

The white cloud may go into shock however, as I think they use thier eyes for finding food a lot more than cory cats do. (maybe?). If you want to treat it I would suggest anything that treats open wounds, as that is what it is. Hope he gets better!

MelaFix, if you have to put something in there. You may not need it though. I have a one-eyed zebra danio that does just fine. There was never any secondary infection so I didn't treat it.
Good luck.

Well the fish "appears" to be doing okay besides some awkward swimming. It still is very flush and pale though. Thanks for the suggestions, I guess I'll just have to monitor and watch for any infection. The fish isn't interested in any food now, I hope its appetite comes back quickly.

I had a pleco that lost an eye. He lived on without problems. He was able to still eat and no infection happened. He looked like a pirate. lol. ARG Pleco Pirate.!!! I do not know which fish did it though.

I saw this puffer fish at my lfs pecking at this scat, when i came back over 20 minutes later both eyes were gone. my gf got grossed out and told one of the people and they put the fish out of its misery.

tiger barbs

prob did it i've heard unless you keep them in a group of 6 or more they will take out their aggression on other tank mates
