Hi there, I just saw that one of my congo tetras has developed into an S shape and cannot seem to swim or hold its position upright very well. It seems out of the blue. Not sure if this is genetic or something wrong in the tank. The others all seem fine. Does anyone have any clue as to what could have gone wrong? I dont think this is a fixable thing. I feek pretty bad for the little guy. Not sure if there is anything I can do.

Are there any other symptoms? The only disease I know of (and that's not saying a lot) that does that is Neon Tetra disease, although I believe I've read that Fish TB can produce an S spine. Doubt it would be that, though.

It's not limited to Neon Tetras, they just get it more than other fishes.

Does it atleast Eat? if it does put it into a QT tank with some general Fish Fix, Melafix I think it's called, It may help. Or your fish might die,

I did some checking:

Sounds more like Neon Tetra (Plistophora hypessobryconis) to me since there are no other symptoms.

Suggest you remove that fish and either hospital or euthanize ASAP. Keep an eye on the rest. Both diseases are very contagious.

Just in case -- fish TB can be contracted by humans. It's not the same as human TB but you really don't want to catch it. Wear gloves, if possible, when you put your hands in the tank. Wash very thoroughly afterwards with an anti-bacterial and pay extra attention to any open wounds or cuts.

No, I don't think you sound dumb at all. Most fish foods are pretty balanced, but it doesn't hurt to rule that out, does it? :)

svtcontour, can you tell us what you are feeding your fish?

your fish spine my also be broke. This happens when the fish does not get the right minerals or can be caused by inter breeding.

My black skirt tetra developed that because he had swimbladder disease. They can not hold position vertically and must swim horizontally or at an angle all the time to maintain a desired level in the tank. The S shape did not develop overnight though - it took a wee bit of time. The shape devoloped because of constant swimming at an angle. Just another avenue possibility.

For my fish, I left it alone. It ate well and lived well. It lasted about 3.5+ years after I noticed it before it past on.

Just a thought.

For feedings, I alternate between the follwing per day....

Hikari mini pellets (size of betta pellets)
Freeze dried shrimp
Blood worms
Tetramin basic flakes

I was looking at the fish very carefully and it does appear that at the first portion of its body which curves (closer to its head), that one side looks more swollen than the other. I'm wondering if its possible that its spine could have been injured. I dont even know how long congos live but its about 3 years old...
