Hi guys,

SO, I want to make a few dividers. I have lots of thoughts and ideas, the best one IMO is using the same mesh that they use in windows(the outer layer so that bugs/insects don't get in). This is super fine, but not sure if it is safe for shrimp, this is going to be used mainly for shrimp tanks, I have over 20ftX3ft of this which is brand new, and has never been used, i think these are made of partial metal, so idk if it will be okay with shrimp. My other thoughts were to find those nets that they make net breeders out of, i want to find a 12sqft piece of that, but i couldn't find ANY size:( Any links, or other ideas would be appreciated, and especially the answer about the window mesh!:)

thx
Ritap;)

I think the window mesh may be too big so the shrimplets would mix. I haven't had shrimp in awhile but would rather try to get the fully plastic/acrylic dividers, with no holes, if you can. Atleast you know it will work. Plus the metal may rust in water.

but then how would the water circulate? i want it so i can use 1 hob;)

i don't think the metal would rust as it is on the outside, and nothing happens when it rains;)

what kind of plastic, and where would i get it, just any plastic would work?

and btw;) the window mesh is like 1mm. I think baby shrimps are 1mm, BUT, I will double layer it meaning, that it will criss cross/overlap so the holes will be only 0.5mm, so problem solved,.

thx

waiting for more:)

and btw, sho, this tank will be having the awesome DW u sent me;)

O then that's ok if you double it. Totally forgot all about that! Just don't let the metal near the shrimp tank just in case it affects the shrimps later on.
The dw may still have tannins. Had them in a tank for over 1 year and it still had tannins, just not a lot leaking out. I actually like tannins in the water:)

Yeah, to be honest I've never had luck with shrimp and tank dividers. If there are any holes, even small ones, the babies can and will make their way through.

Plus, if the divider doesn't completely go above the water, then the shrimp can climb over...even fully emerging out of the water into the air to climb over it.

Not saying you won't have luck or find a good solution, but if you're trying to separate populations/color morphs that might interbreed, then the only safe bet is to house them in different tanks entirely, IMHO.

im confused;) i said im using metal mesh, and then u say its okay, but don't let it near the shrimps? sorry?:)

that is what I thought, I will have a lid on the tank flush with the divider, so NO gap anywhere in the divider, and I have yet to see a baby shrimp small enough to go through a .5mm hole, even the eggs barely fit, so how do the babies

im thinking about more tanks, the only prob. is that i currently don't have room for them YET, Might try splitting with plastic/something else and using 2 separate filters? any other ideas, keep em coming!:)

2 very tiny tanks? Maybe... 1/2 the size of what you were going to use?

Oops, sorry. Scanned through too fast. I thought you had the regular black mesh (with only the frame made of metal).
It will probably be best if you get separate tanks. If you don't have room and want to spend some money, you can get some white plastic mesh (it's usually in the craft sections of stores since people use it for knitting and stuff), find something to hold them in place, and use silicone to glue it to the sides of the tank or tote (might not work if the tote expands with water; works great in glass tanks though).
