I have a 30gal tank that will soon be empty, and i want to know about new inhabitants. They need to meet these requirements:

-Not to expensive, between $10-$20
-Will eat molly fry by the dozen
-Will be okay in small groups or alone
-does not need high maintenance
-easy to care for
-can live off of tropical fish flakes, or something like it. And molly fry.
-does not need a heated tank (optional)
-looks nice or has a good personality
-WILL NOT BREED!

Any ideas? I was thinking convict but IDK about their water temp requirements. I also heard that they breed, so that is another ding against them...

So, anyone else got any ideas?

Convicts will definately breed! Just about anything will eat molly fry IMHO. The African Butterfly is a nice fish. Angelfish would do the job.

Thank you all for your help! I will look into those fish today.

I think angel fish tick most of the boxes :)

Convicts are a bad idea. They spawn like crazy.

If you decide to heat the tank a lot of Haplochromis African cichlids should work. If you don't heat the tank assuming it stays above 65, some of the med-sized central american cichlids should work. You might try Gymnogeophagous if the temps are lower.

I inherited a black ghost knife in a 29-gallon. He'd been in there for a couple of years and stayed another year before I rehomed him with someone who had a bigger tank. He shared the tank with my guppies, and I never had a fry problem until he went to his new home. A black ghost knife won't be cheap, but you can probably get one for $25 - $30. I fed mine mainly flakes, but also frozen blood worms. Plus, he had lots of guppy fry for snacks. Hardly ever saw him, though, except when I fed in the mornings. Otherwise, he'd hide out in his log. But a black ghost knife is a beautiful fish to watch. Also, they will learn to eat from your hand. Finley was the best!
