I am thinking about setting up a cichlid tank and I have my heart set on Frontosas. I was wondering if the fish commonly sold in most pet stores as "assorted african cichlids" such as the different malawai cichlids would go with them. If not what would.

you need a huge tank for a frontosa, like a 125 when they grow up. They get to 14 in, and when they are small you may be able to get away w/ a 55 or bigger, but they need a big tank. If you can supply the big tank, yes malawi cichlids can go with them, i keep mine with red zebras and haps and peacocks. But the y have to be a little bigger species like Hap ahli. Also another fact to consider is that the "mixed africans" or "mixed mbuna" are not good for one reason, inbreeding. You never know what you get in those tanks, if you want malawi cichlids, find a lfs that keeps each species in a diff tank so you know exaclty what spcies you are getting. Ive made the mistake of buying from a tank labled mixed and i have a bumblebee cross, and i dont know what he is crossed with. Now if you know the cross and understand cross breeding then by all means buy from the mixed tank, but if you want pure buy from a diff place.

I agree, if you have the resources to house full grown frontosa at 12+ inches then great, these are wonderful fish go for it. But if you cant provide them with a 100+ gallon tank then i advise against getting them.

They do best in species-only tanks, but have been known to mix with other Tangs and some malawi species like larger more peaceful haps. I dont think frontosas would like mbuna... because they are more laid back.

I agree with the species tank idea, if you like them that much and can provide the tank, why not get 3 or 4, they are very nice fish, and cute as a button when they are small, and so regal and impressive when big. If i had the money i would get a couple, i only have the one i have now because im saving him until i can find a place for him at work.
my two cents on the mbuna(if you are going to get them) go w/ a hap ahli and some electric yellow haps and maybe some fuellibornis (my personal favourite)
