I have been doing fresh water for about 10 years now and have bred everything from angels to frontosa to midas. So by no means am I a beginner to aquaria. I recently was given a 55 gal predrilled with overflow in the corner, all the lighting, protien skimmer, several power head and 15gal sump with 600 gph pump.

my question is what would be a good mix to start with and I can't get any clear anwser on using my tap water to mix the salt water. I have no copper or iron traces as my water is very soft. Any help with this would be most appreciated.

Thanks

I would also check your water from A to Z.. Does it have any of the other things we test for..

ammonia
nitrite
nitrate
phosphates (well water normally has phosphates at some level)
ph
etc etc etc

Not all well water is bad, but it is also going to depend on your surroundings. I have a friend who well is on a natural aquafir and has great water.. But then there is another guy I know who lives in a rural agricultural area and has all kinds of nitrates in his well water from agricultural applications.

If you are unsure, go to your rural extention office and see if they can tell you what is in your well water, or point you to an agency that can and then make your determination from there.

I personally won't set up a saltwater tank without an RO/DI unit. I live in a city and have water that is worse than most well water. But with water quality being what we strive for the most in this hobby it also should be the area in which we spend the most research on when setting up our tanks.

Welcome to AC and marine tanks. I agree with Clown in at least testing your source water for everything that we'd typically test for in order to make the final call on whether you want to try using your tap water.

When you ask about a mix, are you asking about stocking?
