Was in my Dr.s office this morning, they of course have the obligatory aquarium.. about a 30 gallon with a 6 inch pleco, and about a 9 inch Tin foil barb. The Barb has an eye (left side of the head) that is protruding about from the face about a half an inch beyond normal.. When I talked to the staff there, they said that the people that service the tank said he was like that because he hit his head trying to jump out of the tank about 3 weeks ago. I told them I didnt think that was the case, but would like to get some feedback about what that could be a symptom for.. seems to me I remember reading something about a disease like that somewhere, but cant find the reference. I have already talked to the supervisor at the facility, and she thought those fish were a bit big for the tank, but since the company that maintanes them said they are fine, they didnt think to Argue.. (( By the way.. the folks that maintain the fish said the tin foil barb was a "Goldfish")) yeah.. winners..

Anyway.. if you could give me some input on symptoms I would appreciate it )

It is true that a protruding eye can be caused by some trauma to that area. If it's just one eye that may be the case. Another cause is popeye, a bacterial infection that can result from a number of things one of them being overcrowding. I'm currently treating my cory cat for this condition and he has made progress over the last five days. One other cause of popeye in fish is TB, in which you would witness the fish getting progressively smaller, to point where the body seems too small for the head. I doubt it's TB though. Probably one of the first two cases.

thanks, eventually found the info I had seen in the past, it was referencing popeye. )) hopefully it will fade away, and they are working on getting a bigger tank )

thanks for the response )

mostly agree with bettaman....

1 side only sounds like damage, both eyes and i would suspect bacterial.......

melafix might be a good suggestion either way.

good luck
