Hi, my brother is setting up a FOWLR aquarium and wants to have a lionfish. The tank is 50g and he wants a dwarf zebra. Our LFS sells the fish for 20 bucks. He isn't looking to have a skimmer, will this be ok.

thanks alot

I've had a 75g FOWLR tank before with a Volitans lion and a trigger and a snowflake eel with no skimmer. I used a Fluval 404 and did small water changes every other week. Tank was crystal clear and the fish were happy. I have a 25g reef tank that has been running for over 3 years and I don't have a skimmer in that tank either. In fact there is no filter at all. Just a ton of live rock, live sand, lots of corals, 3 fish and inverts. There are three pumps in the tank for circulation and i do small water changes in that tank every few weeks. That tank is also crystal clear. I think your brother would be fine without a skimmer, as long as he has a good filter. Good luck!

thank you for your help! What are some cool fish that go with a lion fish? what did you do about the risk of getting spiked?

When i cleaned the tank, I used some heavy duty tank gloves and kept an eye on where the lionfish was. If you get stung, flush with hot water to denature the poison. While the dwarf lion is a good choice for the 50g tank, some of the more suitable tankmates would not be. You could do a yellow tang and a snowflake eel, if you have powerful filtration and do regular water changes. The tang would be active and the eel would be good comic relief with there antics. Just make sure your tank is escape proof! Have fun!
