Hi I have trouble sleeping with my fish’s filter on at night. How long can fish live without filters? Particularly Chinese algae eaters, platys, Gornaumis, and angelfish.

Well... people have kept fish way before filters were invented, so you'd be fine overnight, but maybe try a quieter filter? What kind do you have now?

Don't shut off your filters for any extended period of time. Not only do they keep the water circulating and oxygenated but the base reason for having them is nullified. You need the devices on all the time (except for a few minutes when cleaning the tank during water changes, etc) to do what their name implies: filter! You want your water to be constantly filtered mecahnically, chemically, and biologically. Try finding a quieter filter and if you want that I'd strongly urge you to spend a few extra bucks and get a Marineland Penguin Bio-Wheel. They are strong, effecient, and most of all quiet.

Depends on how stocked the tank is, how much bio-gunk and algae are in the tank and if you have live plants. Live plants compete for Oxygen at night and create Co2, which makes it more difficult for the fish to breathe. All the other living organisms, such as the bacteria and algae compete as well. Try an air pump with an air line and air stone (the stone isn't really necessary, but will keep the noise of the bubbles down to a dull roar) to keep the water circulating at night. It will aid in the Oxygen and Co2 exchange at the water's surface. Depending on the tank, 30 minutes could be too long without movement of the water's surface, causing a lack of oxygen for the fish.

Hi 5Bettamom...what is your tank size? also which noise is bothering you: the water rushing into the tank from the filter or the motor hum? If its the water try raising the water level...or you can try adding a piece of plastic to the output to let the water flow directly into the tank water without splashing...

You could get a cannister filter. The Renas I have are super quiet...you don't hear a hum or water gushing or anything. :) Then the tank would be filtered and you could sleep at night. I know how ya feel...my 55g planted is in my room and I was so glad to move the HOB filter to another tank. Now the tank has a Rena XP3 and you can't hear it at all.
