I am close to being done with my fishless cycle, nitrites are starting to drop. My question is, when I do the big 90% water change after the cycle is compete, can I add dechlorinator to the almost empty tank, then fill the tank straight from the tap. (using my no spill clean n fill python) Will this kill the cycle? The reason I ask, the 55gal tank is downstairs (no water supply), filling the tank back up with pre-dechlorinated water would involve carrying a 5gal bucket down the stairs several times.
I do not want to risk loosing my cycle, so if you say bucket, I will do it!

Good question. I guess I would lug a couple of declor filled buckets down, get the water level up to 15-20 gallons, and then put in more Prime and fill er up. It may not be necessary but better safe than sorry.

i always put dechlor staright into the tank and refill...

I would NOT take the chance of pretreating the tank with such a massive water change. But why assume you have to lug buckets up and down the stairs? Why not just fill each bucket right there next to the tank with the Python and then pour it in?

why are u doing a 90% water change, when the cycle is completed the beneficial bacteria is found in the water, in the gravel, on the glass. without a bioload really, it would be easy for you to go into a minicycle. I have minicycles happen here and there on my 25 gal tank when i do about 65% water changes here and there. Eveytime i refill my tank with my python i put the dechlorinator into the tank while the water is running. It shouldnt throw your cycle off, the only thing i can see causing a minicycle would be a lack of beneficial bacteria.

Bacteria are not found to any degree in the water. If you're getting minicycles caused by large water changes it's more likely being caused by inadequate dechlorination.
