I have a 29 gallon tank, dimensions 30x12x18.
I would like to get one of the fish need t5HO fixtures due to low cost but the only sizes available are 24" and 36"...
Which would be a better fit? is the 24" even an option? other suggestions?
Get the 36". The ends of the strip are covered...about 2-3" on each side so no light goes through anyways. It might look a little goofy with some of the strip hanging off but you shouldn't be losing any light. With the 24" you're not reaching enough of the tank. Just don't use the legs and you'll be set.
If you scroll down a ways you can see the 24" fixture. I'm using it on a 15 gallon, which is a 2 foot tank, and I bet only 20" or so in the middle are directly under the light.
Just to add you likely wouldn't be able to use the mounting legs on the 24" if your intent was to brace to the end of the tank as it would be to short. I know I'm stating the obvious but with the 36" they should be adjustable to the smaller size of 30" and remain suspend with the legs. At least that was the case on their old design.
The legs slide inward so you could mount the larger light on your tank, although the brackets are hard to fit on a standard rim tank. If yours is rimless then you won't have a problem. I did a review of the 48" a while back at http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=216598
