fixing noisy hob filters

I have a bunch of tanks and some of them have aquaclear hob filters. These filters always seem to get really noisy after a while and annoy me half to death. Does anyone know how to quiet them down?

Just now I was changing the filter media in my aquaclear 110. Previous to this it ran like a charm, producing no noise at all. Now the thing is producing what I can only describe as a grating noise. I took the thing apart, cleaned out the scum build up, made sure there was no substrate in the impellor - now, fully cleaned, it is making more noise then it was before!

What gives? I have another aquaclear 20 that makes the same noise and I had to stop using it because I couldn't sleep at night. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Could be unlevel like MG said, try pushing down on the lid sometimes mine rattles(hums) a bit if it's not snapped on tight. Mine I can only hear about 5 feet from the tank, and I have perfect hearing LOL :grinyes:

With my AC's, it can take a little while to get the last of the air out of the intake tube at the U. It always goes away though pretty quickly. This is the only time mine ever make a noise.

Your AC 110 might be noisy because the impeller shaft is worn from either age or sand ingestion. You can buy a new shaft (I don't know where though) but here is my solution which I am extremely pleased with.

I bought an Eheim 2215/2217 ceramicshaft and replaced the AC 110 metal shaft. The AC110 shaft size is 0.115 diam x 2 3/4" long; the 2215/2217 shaft is 0.117 diam x 3 7/16" long. It works perfectly fine & is extremely quiet; you just need to be careful removing the intake tube because it does extend into it slightly.

I did not come up with this solution as it was suggested on another forum.
