i have a black mystery apple snail and once a day, i find him floating around the top of the tank. i know he's not dead because often times he's got his shell open and looks like he's trying to grab onto something. what would cause this?
Hey Celeste: My snails like to float sometimes...usually at night I find one or two of them riding the current from the filter. They look like they're just doing it for fun...pushing off the walls of the tank and bouncing around. Other times they just float in one spot because they are not interested in looking for anything to eat (if there is some air in their lungs, they float if they let go of any surface). They just hang there until something interests them. Have you ever checked out the website www.applesnail.net? They have a FAQ that talks about floating behavior, inactivity for long periods of time, etc.
Mine does that too occasionally, and I just checked out the FAQ's , which was reassuring, but can they un-float when they want? Sometimes mine just floats in circles due to the filter current. If its been more than a day, I usually try to hold him up to the glass and let him latch on, and he usually does, but I'm not sure he actually needs my help
Mine like to float too, but they can unfloat when they want. They dump the air bubble and drift down where they please. It's raining apple snails! Don't fret it unless you have rocks they might crack their shells on during the descent.
