My son recently came into possession of a 10gal tank. After a thourough cleaning of the tank and the (new) gravel, he filled the tank with with water and let it come to room temperature (even installed a heater) for several days. He then purchased some rather cheap, small fish to start out with, a couple of Platys and some Tetras.

We now see "something", on the gravel, that appears to be fixed or anchored there and "waves" with the movement of the water. Could this be some sort of chemical imbalance, fungi or something of this nature?

As you can appreciate, I'd like to get this cleared up as soon as possible!

Hi bigbird. What does it look like- color/size/etc.

Do you have a filter running at all?

Read the stickies at the top of this forum before you do anything else.

Could be some suspended particulates that were with the gravel. It's always a good idea to rinse, rinse, and re-rinse substrates.

Prolly some sort of fungus that was dormant on the gravel. Did you rinse it with hot water before you put it in the aquarium i always pasturise gravel before i add it to the tank (steam it and dip it in and out of rolling boiling watter)
