I have been thinking of adding 2 florida flag fish to my 10 planted tank. There are only 2 platies in the tank now. In the future i may move the flag fish over to my future 55g planted rainbow tank. Does anyone see any problem with those ideas? Any experience would be great. Thanks Zach

Should this tread be in the general section??

just be careful since flagfish can be aggressive. they also eat shrimp i learned this the hard way. they should get along with all the fish you plant to keep them with.

A pair of FFGs can be interesting. They spawn frequently and can be devoted to each other. A ten gallon is too small however unless they are juvies.

Don't get two males. Fortunately they are easy to sex. The females have a distinctive black 'eye' spot just behind the dorsal fin.

thanks i was wondering about sexing. i know that the females are smaller. How about just keeping one. Do they do better as a pair, group, or single?

The safest bet is a single female. Males tend to be more aggressive. If you get two, get females unless you want to try for a mated pair. With a male and female you can get some aggression when they are in spawning mode. I had a pair recently that had Cichlid like devotion to each other. Fun to watch them swim side by side and go through their mating rituals.

They are not the prettiest fish however, and I find that they seem more appropriate in a cool water type tank. They look and act more like fish you would catch in a lake than tropical fish.

Well i guess i will have to look closer at the fish at the lfs becasue i think they were all males. I ones i saw i think were in breeding color because they had a dark almost black body with irresdesent spots of red, blue, and yellowish. I was drawn to the colors. The other FFF i have seen have looked just like the pics. sort of drab with irredesent spots.
