florida flagfish

Swimfins

This is as good as it gets.
I got a pair today, male and female. They were labled "American" Flagfish.

Don't forget I live in Canada (in a French province) lol.

I named them George and Barbra Bush (har har!)

But, they've been looking at me all evening, waiting for a handout...forget the hair algae. But they sure know what fish flakes are! :mad2 Cute anyway.

I originally bought 4 of these fish (2 male,2 fem.) and now have about 8 or 9. I threw them in a rubbermaid tub for the summer and had 5 babies when I brought them in during fall! They must be continueing to breed cause I have 3 different sizes of offspring and at least 6 have been added to the originals. I tried to add 3 of my flags to a planted tank with a 9" Blackbelt cichlid....went well for a month or so, but alas....must have been a midnight snack!

Great fish, very active shoalers, always looking for hair algae in my tanks....even when fed well. They actually appear quite cichlid-like in my opinion....a bit territorial toward some others....males nip a bit at each other....anyways I have them all in a 55 by themselves now! I'm thinking of adding 1 mini-puffer to see if that works out.

Hardy fish yes. Its true they tolerate salt well, if the puffer tolerates them.

My hair algae is a bit tuff, having been there awhile. I'm going to pick off some by hand. Maybe they will go for the softer new growth.

These two are always to gether, I can imagine a school of them in a planted tank would be reall nice. Hmmm, now I've got new ideas for my empty 25 gallon :) Thanks.

The species of flag fish you are talking about jordanella floridae is commonly refered to as the American flagfish.

So they weren't wrong from a common name stand point. This comes from the markings on the fish that happen to resemble the American flag.

What store did you buy them at? I'm assuming it was one of the Aqua Tropicals? Most of the other stores in this city usually don't carry stuff like them.

We have a few left at Big Al's not many though. They are labeled properly (jordanella floridae) but the are called American Flagfish by all three of our suppliers that we get that particular fish from. Of the three suppliers two of them are located in the US (florida and california) the other is from singapore. So it seems that the name is worldwide not just Quebec.

Give them some time. I had a horrible hair algae problem when I got my trio and now the tank is completely clear of it. They didn't start to eat it for two days so be patient.
