Locals here can tell you that it's not a good idea to go out past the second sand bar. There is a trench around that area where bait fish abound, so do the sharks feeding on them. Unfortunately, this girl didn't know. While the flag system seems to work well enough, I would think there should be signs warning swimmers of the dangers of passing that sand bar and going further into the gulf. If not more permanent lifeguards to patrol that area of beach where there is heavy tourist traffic.

Scary stuff! Did hear about the attacts on two seperate occasions by great whites in Australia, both times they were first bitten in half and on the second attack the shark came back and devoured the rest of the man completely, scary stuff.

I think those tampon commercials where they say you can go swimming are misleading -- maybe in a pool, but not in the ocean!!

I made that mistake once at that time of the month and had a shark come after me. My sister jumped in front of me to block it (wow, how heroic!!) and when the shark realized it was people and not fish it did not continue to advance. Thank God it was a nurse shark, and not aggressive, for most sharks probably would have gone for a taste anyhow. It was very large, maybe 6 feet and would have done plenty of damage before it knew I was not fish.

people always blow shark attacks way out of proportion. When was the last time the news reported someone died of bee stings? Or got bit by another human? Both are far more likely to happen than getting bit by a shark.

Btw I forgot to mention that these attacks were this year only a few monthes ago, and the attacks themselves were only two months apart.

I also think people should be warned about wearing sparkly things, which can attract sharks too, and informed that sea-lice is not a joke. Since I grew up basically in a prairie I thought lice was only something you got in your hair. I also don't like the fact that at many beaches there is a pier you can fish from, so bait is being used right close to the swimmers. :shark:
