Locals here can tell you that it's not a good idea to go out past the second sand bar. There is a trench around that area where bait fish abound, so do the sharks feeding on them. Unfortunately, this girl didn't know. While the flag system seems to work well enough, I would think there should be signs warning swimmers of the dangers of passing that sand bar and going further into the gulf. If not more permanent lifeguards to patrol that area of beach where there is heavy tourist traffic.
