Has anyone used either of these?
Anyone used both?
What's the difference?
Are these really that beneficial?
Does it cloud up really badly?
Does it sink quickly when disturbed?

I use Estes' Marine Sand in all my tanks (not actually a true marine sand). We are setting up a 60 gallon tank at my work for discus and angels and we are going to have it planted. I am planning on just using the Estes' like always (my plants do really well on it). But I was considering using either the onyx or the black sand from Flourish as a selling point for the product. Any feedback about the differences and benefits is highly appreciated. Thank you.

I have flourite black sand in 1 tank, it's very fine & dust-like. I tried to put a layer oif Estes sand on top. It's better but even the very small AC filter blows them around making craters. I'm glad it's a small tank.

I tried rinsing before use but gave up. The tank was cloudy for a few days. I wrapped floss over the intake. I lose a tiny bit each water change.

I have 7 bags of the fourite sand. I love the look of it and how fine it is(good for some of the plants I am keeping). It was horrible trying to wash it, I also gave up. Just run some good mechanical filtration before putting your fish in the tank.

Really, any soil/substrate will be good for the plants laced with nutrients for plant growth will suit you well. I would go for look above all because it will be there for a long time. Eventually, the plants will have exhausted the nutrients anyway.

I have the flourite onyx. It's not exactly black, more of a dark grey. It clouds up if not rinsed well, but after that it settles quite nicely. Photos of my tank with it are in my journal(which will be updated soon I hope, no internet at home = no new photos)
