I just read an article about how flowerheads are evil fish because they're hybrids and we should not buy them and if we see one we're supposed to kill it. I know there has been a lot of controvery over blood parrots, too. So what do y'all think about that? I don't think we should be dyeing fish or doing some weird genetic engineering but I don't know, is crossing fish the end of the world? Maybe because it is unnatural but I dunno.

not the end of the world lol, crossbreeding happens all the time and make cool combinations....they are also refered to as flowerhorn cichlids, those things are nuts, absolutely crazy. I don't think we should kill them, they are great fish...it would attack the glass in the craziest way, would follow anyone or anything in front of the tank, but a great site to see, it also had a beautiful look to it. Even though it is a hybrid, its a great fish. He paid 150 or so for it when it was 3-4 inches, I'm not sure if he overpaid cuz I ask around and everyone says thats about right....

they certainly look interesting. I figure keeping fish in tanks at all is fairly unnatural. Still can't get over that whole fish coloring thing, though. Anyway, don't know if they were mislabled or not but there were fish at the LFS yesterday labled as flowerhorns (looked like juvies would I assume) for less than 20 bucks. The bad thing is that I read that they need like a 120g tank and I bet lots of people would buy babies and not know that.

Well seeing as they get to approx 14 inches, a 75g should be the recommended minimum tank size for them. Right now my friend has his in a 55g with 5 assorted africans, he started out with 10 and the FH caught 5 in 2 weeks, won't eat them, just kill em and let the others eat it. He is moving it to a 180g pond so it will be cool to see.....

Yea, Larissa, I don't know about the Flowerheads, but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone on these boards who are fine with fish being injected with dye. It's cruel, it kills a lot of fish just in the process and the added coloring is usually gone within a few months anyway! Disgusting! I think the word must be getting around on them too, because I never see dyed fish anywhere anymore! Except occasionally at my local Walmart...

call me ignorant but I didn't even realize people dyed fish until I saw some about a month ago. I was telling my mom about it and she's not in the hobby like I am and she was like, that's sick. how awful.
