I have 75 gal aquarium with a 10 gal sump i know the 10 gal is a bit small but i was considering adding some chambers to it i already have a decent prefilter so in the chambers i was thinking about attempting to make one of the chambers like a fluidized bed filter is there any possible way to make it work have water enter from bottom of sand bed and flow up through it and have a real thin mesh screen or sponge at top of chamber to keep sand from entering the return pump chamber any suggestions

the 75 has a built in overflow chamber with a home made durso standpipe could adding a little sand to it the bottom of it possibly work? just enough to where the water flow in the chamber sturs it up but not high enough to be sucked into the pipe

I dont think it would be possible to build a fluidized bed chamber in your sump. Reason being, for a FBF to operate, there needs to be lots of water pressure to push the grains of sand into the water column. The overflow on your tank doesnt give enough water pressure to do so.

I agree, if you have ever seen one working you will see that it a a good flow stiring it up witch is more than your sump will produce but if you have the room in your sump you could build a small one and put it on the return side of your sump pump if it is strong enough.

I dont know how feasible building your own sand filter would be, never looked into it. But in a sump, if there is insufficient flow for the sand filter it cant be that hard to put an additional pump in there... I wouldnt even factor in the overflow, just use a dedicated pump. No big deal at all.

Or if you dont diy the sand filter and buy one, you could add it into a sump filter setup but instead of in-sump put it inline with the return pump. You may even have to divert some of the flow and bypass the sand filter to get the flow set right through the sand filter.
