hey i'm going to be setting up a 90G freshwater tank for angels or possibly discus in the next few months and around here it seems the filter of choice is the fluval 404 for a tank that size. The tank will be planted as well. Any thoughts on the 404 or recommendations for another filter. Thanks

I have 3 of the Fluval 404's and 1 Rena Filstar XP3. Both of these are great cannister filters. On my Discus tank I have a Fluval 404 and it does a great job.

IMHO, I would recommend these 2 filters. Ehiems are a great filters, but you will have to pay a little more though to do the same level of filtering.

From your post it sounds you might be buying it locally. I would suggest ordering online. It would save you alot of money.

XP-3

I prefer the Filstar XP-3.

I have also had very good luck with the Fluval x04 series (a vast improvement over the x03's). I have two 304's and two 404's, and have been running them for, er, well more than a year, but I don't really remember when I bought them. Anyway, no problems at all. They are quiet and easy-to-clean, and relatively inexpensive when purchased on-line (Big Al's or Drs. Foster & Smith are two good sources).

thank you all for your advice. i think i will be using a 404 on my tank once i have it in place. as far as buying on-line is concerned, i would rather see my money go to the local store than a faceless website.

I'm running 2 canisters on my 80 gallon. Fluval 404 and Filstar XP-3.... The XP-3 filtered better than the Fluval; it removed more debris. If the Fluval 'dies' Filstar will replace it. ;)

I understand your point there. Although when I went to buy my fluval 404 at my 'favorite' lfs. I decided that I would spend my money on the faceless guy, Big Al. My lfs was charging $289 for the same fluval I got at Big Als for $89.

I can understand making a buck here and there, but I'm all for saving a few bucks now and then!

So now I spead my money around. Tanks, fish food, fish, I buy at the lfs anything else, filters, heaters I get at big als.
