Fluval FX5 question

I got one one these filters for free from a buddy's boss who was just gonna toss it. Now my buddy grabbed everything he could find, but I'm missing two of the media baskets. Now I never use the media baskets in any filter (only put in Chemi-Pure) as I find it to be a nitrate factory. I mainly use filters for water turn over. Will this work with out the baskets? Have yet to hook it up and it might be awhile till I do. I Also got a brand new Red Sea skimmer that pretty much just has the main skimmer and the pump, but no plumbing or instructions. Everything I've seen on the net looks like ya put it in the tank? anybody got a link or something to how to set this up. Thanks for any answers.

the fx5 well work with out baskets but im sure you could pick them up kinda cheap , sorry i know nothing about your skimmer . i have a fx4 dont see why it cant work with out baskets

Thank you. Gonna try it soon, just wanted to make sure I'm not gonna waste my time cleaning it if won't work with out the baskets. On major budget. Had a bunch of stuff dropped in my lap, which is fine with me but I can't afford to fix any of it if it doesn't work. Got two Coralife Mh's but they are missing the ballasts:wall:. Stinks 'cause I have never been able to afford any Mh's before. They will sit til my money tree blooms in spring.
