Hi,

I'm trying to figure out what filter to get for my 45 gallon tank. I was going to use a Penguin 350, but now I'm leaning towards the canister filters since it seens like a better choice, although more $$$. Plus space is tight, so I'm thinking with a canister i can push my tank closer to the wall.

So I hear many say the Eheim is the way to go if money is no object. But which model series are we talking about? The classic is at the low end in the $100 up range...and then there other models cost some serious bucks.

I believe I can get a Fluval 305 or and Eheim 2215 in the low 100s. Which one is a better choice do you think? Or to save a few bucks, I was thinking of getting a Fluval 304 for like $84! Only bad thing on the 304 I heard was maybe the hose clamp thing to the tank. Not sure if there is a DIY fix for that...

Anyone have some input on the filters?
Thanks!!

I have never had an Eheim but have heard only good things. However, I have bought both of my Fluvals this year and couldn't be happier with them. I went with the Fluvals because they are 1. cheaper (especially with Petsmart price-matching) 2. easier to find supplies for.

Thanks for everyone's input. I order up an Eheim 2215 Classic. I should have asked this before, but how's the cleaning on this one? Does it have baskets? Am I going to have to repack all the layers to get to the bottom?
Thanks

No baskets for the Eheim Classic - but you can put the media in filter bags. Just lift the bags out to clean. That's how I have mine set up.

I have a 2215 running on my 55 gallon planted tank, and love it. I think you'll fine it a nice filter for your setup.

I have an 4 Eheim Pro II's (2026 & 2028 models). These are the best filters I have ever used. They are very easy to prime and very easy to maintain. I can disconnect them, clean them out, and have them back in the tank in less than 10 minuets.

I have had many HOB filters, they work great but I love my canisters. My first canister was a Fluval 304. I hated this filter. It was a pain to prime and I've had issues with it leaking. I kept it in a 5 gallon bucket because you never knew what it was going to do. I have never had any problems with the Eheim's.

The 2215 does not have any media trays. That is one reason I choose the PRO II. The PRO II's are more money (159.99 at petsmart.com) but if you plan on enjoying your aquarium for years and years it will pay for itself quickly just in less hassel alone. Also, the PRO II's have flow meters so you can better tell when you need to clean it. The PRO II's also have 1 push prime and a single quick disconnect for intake and output.

From what I have seen with my Eheim you will enjoy your's. Can't be the silence and reliability!

I have eheim 2215's going on two of my aquariums and I could not be happier. They are extremely efficient filters and thier quality can not be beat. They are top of the line filters. They also run flawlessly and silently. I think you will find this to be an excellent filter and you will never look back.

personally i dont like those media baskets, they just take away the space from putting more media in..
