Help!! I just got a 35 gallon tank, and no matter how hard I try to keep it clean, it gets muggy and foggy. How do I keep it clear???

Here is what I have done:
1. Clean the rocks
2. Change the rocks
3. Buy a new filter
4. Pray!!

I think everyone is going to ask you to post your nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia levels for all to see.

If you keep cleaning/changing out the substrate and filter and decor, I imagine youd have a never-ending algae bloom, which can make the water cloudy.

My what, my what and my what levels? Isn't this a newbie post? I'm not sure about that....how can i find out???? :thud:

You can get a test kit .. >>;
It's a good idea to test for those three so you know what's going on in your tank ...

When my fish water gets cloudy it's because I feed them too much...

Buy an AP master liquid test kit.

There are simple tests that wiil show what your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH levels are of your tank water. You should also do these tests an your tap water after it has set out in a shallow dish overnight.

What kind/how many fish do you have in the tank? What kind of filtration? Any live plants? How long has the tank been up and running? Did you cycle the tank? Use biospira to jump start?

I would suggest you stop cleaning everything in the tank as it's doing more harm than good and could possibly be the root of the problem. Place a white sheet of paper behind the tank and look at it from the front. Is the cloud a green cloud or a white cloud? If it is green, it is an algae bloom but I doubt it since the tank is new. What you probably have is probably a bacteria bloom. The problem is, each time you clean the surfaces of things though (the plants and decor, possibly the filter pads, the filter itself), you are keeping that cloud going. You need to allow this bacteria in the water to settle where it needs to, constant cleaning is not allowing for that. Allow the cloud to be there and follow with your regularly scheduled maintenance schedule of water changes/gravel cleaning once a week if not more. Post your nitrate/nitrite/ammonia levels too once you get the kit so we know there isn't anythng else going on in your tank.

just to clarify what rbishop said, AP means aquarium pharmiceuticals.

cloudiness is caused by two things:
  • bacterial bloom, caused by excess nutrients(amonia and nitrite), usually when you don't have enough light fo your setup. Will make the water turn grayish white.
  • algae bloom, caused by, again, excess nutrients, usually when you have too much light for your setup. Will make the water turn green.
