food coloring?

this maybe stupid but is food coloring toxic to fish? i kinda wanna add a few drops to my tank to give it a cool blue tint
 
save eyourself money and a headache...no. If you wnat a blue tint, get special lights; because the amount of dye that you would have to add would most likely be toxic.
 
if its toxic or not i wouldnt do it. just buy actinic bulbs or get the accent lighting that will "color" your water.
 
Food dye is not significantly toxic to fish in the short term, but I cannot imagine that chronic exposure would not have some detrimental reffects, even if small ones.
 
You could put some sort of contact film over the glass in front of your light to give it color--that would be easy to change and wouldn't harm your fish. Or you could put the contact paper around the outside of the tank--that would proabably actually help the fish--as they'd feel more secure not having to see people stick their heads in front of them.
